The St Malo Race, also known as the Cowes-Dinard-St Malo Race, is one of the oldest races in the RORC (Royal Ocean Racing Club) calendar. Made so popular over the years due not only to its legacy but its varied course, interesting conditions and tempting finish destination; the stunning walled town of St Malo, France.
The 151 nautical mile race starts from the Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, and will see the fleet of international competitors leave the Solent for the Channel crossing. Keeping east of the Casquets TSS and the Channel Islands of Les Hanois and Alderney, teams will race south to St Malo, to finish under the imposing ramparts of the walled city. Here the Société Nautique de la Baie de St Malo warmly welcomes crews who can then enjoy the best of the old town, filled with bustling restaurants and bars, over what is normally the Bastille Day weekend celebrations.

Race Skipper and accomplished round the world sailor Guy Waites, who will be leading one of the Clipper Events team entries in the race, reports on what you can expect: “It’s a great opportunity for people of all levels of sailing experience. It’s a cross channel race of around 150 nm, so we will be racing day and through the night, we have shipping lanes to cross, some very tricky tidal situations, especially around the channel islands, before arriving in the fabulous town of St Malo.”

Thursday 4 July – join the boat at 0900 in Gosport
Friday 5 July – Race start 10:50 (subject to change)
Saturday 6 July- Racing. The race is 151 miles and will take approximately 24 hours to complete. Downtime and time to explore St Malo subject to race finish time.
Sunday 7 July – Morning prizegiving in St Malo, followed by a sail back to Gosport
Monday 8/ Tuesday 9 July – Expect to depart Gosport by Tuesday morning at the very latest, depending on conditions.
The cost to take part is £1,140 per person, inclusive of race entry fees, a fully equipped and staffed Clipper 68 yacht, on board accommodation, a training day, arrival dinner, on board catering and use of Musto foul weather gear during the race, and a technical top to keep.
